Sudbury – Sault St Marie – Wawa – Terrace Bay
This driving statline does not look impressive, but whatever we lacked in mileage we picked up in the experiences.
Sudbury is most known for nickel mining (supplying up to 40% of nickel to US and England during WWII), which it is seemingly trying to distance itself from by dabbling in the sexy “new economy” industries, like medical research. Yet, the city is still most remembered by a giant 10 metre “Big Nickel” 5 cent coin and Canada’s second tallest free-standing structure – a smokestack at a copper smelter. Let’s move on, but remember the Laughing Buddha, a cozy bar with a good selection of local drafts, which doubles as an overflow showroom for the Sudbury Art Gallery.
On the way to Sault St Marie:
Somewhere around Sault St Marie, two of our three cell phones entered into the Telus no-coverage zone of darkness, which persists all through Northern Ontario and into Manitoba. Nadya’s Rogers iPhone is the only way to browse Wikipedia, learning about the surrounding towns (and putting in an occasional & rare tweet).
Several times we stop along the winding road adjacent to Lake Superior. A few look-outs, a Lake Superior beach, where we all the swimming season, an abandoned gas station.
This gas station was just too much to pass up and not tickle our SLR- and instagram-toting hipster sides.
Serendipitously, we stopped at a sideroad in the Lake Superior Provincial Park (somewhere here), to discover a geological and anthropological sight in one. Approximately a billion years ago, the granite fractured under the pressure and the cracks allowed the lava to flow. The softer diabase eroded, leaving granite "chasms" or tunnels, such as this one:
On the rock walls along the lake, the Obijwe natives etched pictograms of various mythical creatures. Misshepezhieu, or underwater panther, is the master of all water creatures, including snakes. This is not from wikipedia, although it does look identical:
We conclude the day by a long drive, pitstopping in Whiteface, ON for the (hopefully) most expensive gas on the trip (143.9/L) and finishing at a German-themed motel outside of Terrace Bay, ON.
